Frequently Asked Questions

What is Portable Appliance Testing?

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is an important part of a company's or individual's responsibility to health and safety. This is done using a series of specialised testing procedures on your portable appliances.

Why should I use Birmingham PAT Testing to complete my PAT testing?

We pride ourselves on tailoring our service to our clients needs and we believe in being up front about how we do business. Our customers don't get a nasty shock when they get the bill as our prices are all-inclusive and costs per item are agreed beforehand.

What does a PAT test consist of?

We start with a visual inspection checking for:

Then a series of tests (depending on the class of equipment), they may include

What is classed as a portable appliance?

A portable appliance is any equipment which is powered between 55 and 240 volts and which is connected to the electrical mains through a plug (usually a standard 3-pin 13 amp plug). We are also able to test both 110v and 240v 16a wet weather equipment along with various 400v 32a 3 phase items if required using adaptors.

Do I have to get my equipment PAT tested?

There are no laws that states PAT testing must be carried out, however it does state that all electrical equipment must be in a safe condition and fit for use. See Electricity At Work Regulations 1989 (Part 2, Section 4).

With a regular maintenance schedule in place, PAT Testing ensures that all equipment is safe and fit for use.

In the Health & Safety At Work Act 1974, all employers have a legal duty to provide safe equipment and every employer must ensure that equipment must be maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and good repair.

How often do my appliances have to be PAT tested?

This depends on the workplace environment and the equipment to be tested but is generally every 12 months. Some items are recommended to be tested on a 3 monthly basis where wear and tear is greater - such as tools on building sites. However some items that are portable but do not move such as desktop computers are generally a lower risk so the period between tests can be longer. We are more than happy to assist companies in choosing the correct periods between testing. Generally we will issue a certificate for 12 months unless agreed otherwise. Our labels only state the date tested so this makes it easier if you wish to delay the re-testing.

Does PAT Testing affect our insurance cover?

Insurance companies assume that when giving insurance cover to a business, the owners of that business are complying with all regulations necessary. An insurance company may reduce, delay or even refuse to pay on a claim for damage if an appliance that has not been tested has caused damage.

Which areas do you cover?

We PAT test throughout the Midlands, including Birmingham, Coventry, Redditch, Stratford, Leamington, Worcester, Solihull, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Tamworth, Redditch, Bromsgrove and many more.

How much will my PAT testing cost?

Our price structure is very simple:

Our minimum charge is just £40.00 which covers up to the first 30 items.

It is then £1.20 per item up to 100 items,

For over 100 items it is a flat rate of 99p per item,

For over 500 items, please call or email for a free, competitive quote.

There are no hidden extras and we do not charge VAT as we are a small family business.

How long will the testing take?

Dependant on access and availability of the items we can test around 100 items per hour between us.

Will the testing be disruptive?

At Birmingham PAT Testing we ensure that any potential downtime for our clients is kept to an absolute minimum. We will also work outside office hours if required - please call or email for a quote.

Will we need to power down our server?

For server equipment we usually carry out visual checks only so they do not have to be turned off. Some server equipment can take a long time to start back up so is very disruptive especially if you have employees working from home. If you do require the server to be fully tested please ensure it is completely shut down before our arrival.
